Sándor palace

Sándor (Alexander) Palace was built by Vince Sándor between 1803 and 1805, Móric Sándor the famous jockey was born here in 1805. He was a celebity of Pest in the 1820-s and 30-s and he was also the last male member of Sándor family. Gyula Andrássy recommended to rent this palace as a governmental office in 1867 and finally it was bought by the state in 1881. It served as the office of Hungarian prime ministers between 1867 and 1945. Governer Horthy moved into the house with his family in 1921. PM Paul Teleki commited a suicide here in 1941 since he could not accept getting involved in the World War II. The palace was mostly ruined in the war and was later used as a museum storage, only its facade was restored by 1989. It interior was rebuilt and furnished between 2000 and 2002, now it houses the Office of the President of Hungary.
